Outdoor Classrooms
At Lakewood Montessori, nature is never far away! Every classroom has a dedicated outdoor space with room to dig, climb, splash, garden, and work (rain or shine). Students flow in and out of the outdoor classroom throughout their work period, with the freedom to choose their ideal workspace. They can read beside the sprouting vegetables, or count beneath the hummingbird feeder… what a lovely way to learn!
Why Nature?
Meaningful experiences in nature make children happier, healthier, and more connected to the world around them.
Natural Playground
Our enormous playground is a classroom in its own right! We’ve thoughtfully developed our natural playground to support learning across domains. This space features an art studio, performance stage, water and sand play areas, a mud kitchen, a loose parts construction zone, and two gardens. Our Children’s House program students spend at least one full hour in this enriched environment every day. This is a place where beautiful memories are made!
The Gardens
Our school gardens are grown with love and care by the children. Students seed, plant, weed, water, compost, study, and harvest a bounty of crops year-round. The fruits, vegetables, and flowers they lovingly tend are used in the classroom, anchoring the children’s work to real-world results. The garden coordinator supports this holistic curriculum, lovingly engaging the students with new experiences and discoveries.
